The AI Report Builder turns a plain-English request — "customers more than 30 days past due with their balance and service area" — into a runnable, editable custom report. It requires build 26.10.05 or later, AI to be enabled (see AI Providers), the Use AI features permission, and custom-report edit permission.
On the Reports dashboard:
If a generated query fails, the builder automatically feeds the database error back to the AI and retries a couple of times before reporting the failure to you.
The Build from existing reports (optional) section offers two ways to reuse work:
Save as new report (or Update this report, when you started from one) saves the result as a normal custom report — it appears on the Reports dashboard and behaves like any hand-written custom report. Reports created this way are marked as AI-generated and keep the original description they were built from, so you can always see what was asked for.
The Report Builder is designed so that customer data never leaves your server:
SELECT statement only, executed by a dedicated read-only database account that cannot modify data, with results capped at 1,000 rows. These guarantees apply equally to SQL you edit by hand in the builder: the same validation and read-only execution path is used.
| Symptom | Meaning |
|---|---|
| "Query rejected: …" followed by a reason | The SQL you ran failed validation (for example, it is not a single read-only SELECT). Fix the SQL by hand, or refine the description and Generate again. |
| "Query failed: …" followed by a database error | The SQL passed validation but the database could not run it. Fix the SQL by hand, or refine the description and Generate again. |
| "Generated a query but it failed after retries: …" | The generated query still failed after automatic repair. Edit the SQL and Run, or refine the description. |
| "Monthly AI cap reached" | You've hit your enterprise-key spend cap — see AI Providers. |
| "AI features are disabled." or "No AI credential is configured for your account." | The master switch is off, or no usable API key resolves for you. |
| Provider error | The AI provider rejected the call (bad key, outage). Check the AI Usage Report error list. |
| Missing or odd columns | Check the assumptions note — the AI states how it interpreted ambiguous requests. Describe the columns you want explicitly and regenerate. |
